HURLEY 1625

TWO COLOR SEPARATION

HURLEY BOYS

The walrus character illustrates how I approach separating color for screen print. Find the highlight, midtone and shadow of important colors. Some might try to capture an entire tonal range with just one black screen.

Much better results are achieved by bridging key colors. This gives us better control on the press and more dynamic color in the print.

Here I use black, a cool grey and the white of the shirt to render the character. Whenever possible, I save a screen, soften the print and use less ink by letting the shirt color be part of the print.
