CAMO PATTERN TILES

CONCEPT AND DESIGN

INSURGENT RECORDS

Insurgent Records was a small New Jersey label with a few punk and hardcore releases. I designed their logo, some apparel merch and did album cover work for them in the late 90’s.

They asked me to design a camouflage pattern to be used on a promotional hoodie and backpack. Normally, making patterns is a pretty analytical process. Each element is sized and placed carefully to create balance and avoid making ugly lines. A good camo however, is organic and should look random. This makes it hard to create a convincing, functional camo pattern.

Each of the Insurgent Records camos was built with a smart photoshop file letting me quickly change colors and add custom effects like graffiti, brush strokes or broken glass . I researched military patterns for color pallets and scaling. When the client settled on a look, I was able to use my ‘camo generator’ to build a production friendly file for the final products.

I liked the red one, they liked the black.  The customer is always right…
